Sun., May 7 - The XL’s (1), The Klassmen (2) with Gayle McCormick I’ll share as more info becomes available.įri., May 5 - The Klassmen (1) with Gayle McCormick I’m still looking for any radio/print ads for the show, and any articles/reports about the hub-bub after Sabbath didn’t show. I also presented him with some music CDs I have put together over the years of local bands: Parchment Farm (I pointed out to Harvey that they had played at the Rainy Daze), The Sonars/Harbinger Street Swains/Body, Back Jack, and Osage Lute, all Franklin County-based bands. I wanted to verify some of the things he told me on Monday and pick his brain on other questions. I returned on Wednesday and he gave me another short interview. Here’s a link to a news clips about that day.Īnyway, I could tell he was wanting to go back to work so we exchanged cards and I thanked him for his time. The tornado continued across North County and caused much damage. He shared some historical trivia during our conversation: on January 24th, 1967, a large tornado touched down near Ladue and Olive, leveled the Chesterfield Manor Nursing Home (right behind the Rainy Daze building), and tore off the rear end of the Rainy Daze building roof (his words). Remember, he was going to take possession of the building in just a few weeks. When I suggested that my research indicated that it was most likely November 23rd or 24th, he said that sounded about right. When I asked what day that occurred, he couldn’t remember for sure. Wow! Again! Wow! Finally, confirmation that I was not imagining that night. He said at some point the glass doors were tore off of the building (his words) and the police had to take over security and access, regulating how many people were in the building at a given time, to not exceed the capacity limits. ![]() When I told him I was standing outside of his doors, he said so was he. He was there that night, not as a fan of Black Sabbath but just to observe. So, 51 years ago, today, according to the man that has been in that building since that day, the Rainy Daze Club at 14100 Olive Street Road closed down.Īfter soaking in this nugget of news, I asked the next big question…do you know anything about the Black Sabbath show cancellation. Obviously, there had been a New Years Eve party the night before. Wow! He quickly shared that he remembers that day very well because there was still ice in the glasses that were sitting about in the room. After giving him a quick primer on why I was there (trying to find out more about the cancelled Black Sabbath show) I think I asked him the big question…when did the Rainy Daze close? He said he purchased the building and began moving his lawn mowers, etc. I could tell he had been asked these questions before and I knew I only had a short time to interview him. He is 81 years young and still sharp as a tack. Out of one of the back rooms came Harvey Keymer, the owner. I really want to know if this is the old Rainy Daze Club.” He said yes, but the owner would know more about that. ![]() I said, “Well, I’m sorry but I’m not here to buy furniture. I walked into the building and one of the salesman asked if he could help me. ![]() Anyway, I took several pictures (shared, below). The front doors, especially, prompted the image I have of standing outside with my friend, Joe Cooke (RIP), maybe 10 or 20 feet from the doors (the building is only about 30 feet or so from the street), waiting in the wet and cold to be let in, and then the word filtered through the crowd that Sabbath was not going to show. The exterior of the building has changed very little over the years. So, I pull into the parking lot and walked toward the building. It’s a business that is in the old Rainy Daze building. My next stop was the Suburban Leisure Center on Olive Boulevard. ![]() I was told all archives are at a different library location. I was hoping to find local newspapers from that time period (1967 into 1971). To recap, I cannot find a radio/print ad for the show or any report/article about the aftermath when the word spread through the crowd that Sabbath was a no-show. So, I had some time this week to do more digging into this subject. Update on the cancelled Black Sabbath show.
